Minutes from ACHMM-NJ & Philly Joint Meeting @ NJDEP June 17th, 2008

6:35 PM John called the meeting to order and thanked everyone for coming.

Secretary’s Report (JE): Minutes of April 15th meeting were reviewed & approved with one (date) change to bullet #9.

Twenty eight people attended last meeting; chapter lost approx. $95.00.

Treasurers Report (JE)-Balance of $69,933.52 with approx. $36.0000.00 in CD’s.

Most money is raised through the EHMM Course taught at NJDEP.

Scholarships (JE)

a.) Tom Dalton Memorial Scholarship:

The NJ Chapter established this to honor Tom Dalton's memory as a professional and as a founding member of the New Jersey Chapter of the Academy of Certified Hazardous Materials Managers. Family members of "current chapter members in good standing" who have declared a major and who have successfully completed at least one full year at the college/university are eligible. This year’s winner was Cecelia Angelone who is a Junior at the University of Vermont. JE summarized her various accomplishments. Cecelia is currently completing an internship with the CDC. Her father Joe Angelone accepted the $1,000 Scholarship on behalf of Cecelia. Joe Angelone thanked the chapter for the very generous scholarship.

The NJ Chapter established this to honor Jim Ross's memory as a professional and an active, long-time member of the New Jersey Chapter of the Academy of Certified Hazardous Materials Managers. EHS professionals working in higher education either as a member of the faculty or as part of the school's EHS department are eligible. This year’s winner is Alejandro Ruiz of Rutgers University.


c.) New Addition
The NJ Chapter will be awarding scholarships to attend the ACHMM 2008 National Conference in Minneapolis from September 7 to 10, 2008. Scholarships are available to New Jersey Chapter members in good standing, i.e., have paid their Chapter dues. Scholarships are available only to members whose employers do not provide or only partially provide financial assistance.


New Business


CHMMunity Update (CP) - The ACHMM-NJ Habitat for Humanity Project will likely begin in Oct 2008 in Mercer, Ocean, Somerset and Hunterdon Counties. Please email the chapter secretary (CJ) if interested.



IHMM Update (P. Spinney)

By-Laws have been re-written; formal draft accepted for changes in Re-certification standards

ANSI accreditation application sent.

This is the first time there has been a fully elected Board of Directors at the Institute.

Executive Director John Frick is retiring…successor search in progress.

The different levels of the CHMM (Master, Senior) will be eliminated as a result of ANSI/ISO standard.

CHMP-program rollout is in progress

20 people have taken the test, however no certifications have been awarded as the institute is working on a “cut-off” score.


ACHMM Update (M. Mandracchia)

Leadership Workshop was very well attended this year in Milwaukee….

The 2009 Leadership Workshop will be held in St. Louis.

Nat’l meeting in Minnesota this year

EHMM is now on-line…the full course or portions are available

There was an EHMM overview course recently held in India and there are discussions about conducting one in China.

Topic: SRP Reforms

Proposed Bill S1897: proposes establishing the Licensed Site Professional in NJ; and various ancillary changes to the SRP Program.


John thanked the speaker and the Philly Chapter for co-hosting the meeting.
